Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the easiest way to set up an estimate?

A: The easiest way to set up an estimate with a WoodCraft Floors representative is to simply call (646)862-7938 OR e-mail info@woodcraftfloors.com to set up an appointment at your convenience.

Q: Engineered vs. Solid Hardwood Floors?

A: Choosing between engineered and real hardwood flooring can be a tough decision. Engineered floors are made from real wood, unlike laminate flooring. There are multiple layers manufactured, cross-bound, under heat and pressure, called ‘plies’. Engineered flooring can be less susceptible to symptoms of moisture and humidity then solid wood. Often, home-owners will opt for Engineered flooring for lower levels of house which are often damper spaces. Hardwood floors are milled completely from real wood in a much simpler process. Real wood is often thicker than engineered, which can ensure the floors in your home survive longer and can be sanded and refinished more times. It is in fact, possible to sand and refinish Engineered flooring, depending on the thickness of the boards.

Q: Pre-finished vs. Un-finished

A: Pre-finished flooring has had its finish or veneer sprayed on by the manufacturer before instillation. Un-finished wood floors are instilled first and refinished after. This allows the owner to choose between more custom colors and finishes. Pre-Finished flooring will come in a variety of colors and textures but aren’t as customizable.

Q: What companies manufacture high quality flooring?

A: WoodCraft Floors has worked with tons of suppliers and manufactures. Woodcraft has used reclaimed wood, originally on the deck of a sunken ship, Bamboo flooring from China, and solid, Red Oak from Northern California to name a few. If its wood, we know how to install it. Woodcraft has been trained and certified to install both Armstrong and Mirage products. While searching for other companies, WoodCraft has also worked with large distributers such as Bruce, and smaller, American-made products from Somerset Flooring.

Q: I want to get my floors refinished but what about the dust?

A: WoodCraft Floors always treats your home as if it was our own. We know the head-aches of home improvement often include the mess, construction can leave behind. WoodCraft Floors always protects any furniture, televisions, and doorways with plastic. We secure the areas we are working to keep the others clean. Once the work is finished, WoodCraft makes a point of vacuuming and wiping down the dust created so it was as if we were never there.

Q: What about all my furniture?

A: To properly refinish a floor, all the furniture needs to be moved from the floor until the polyurethane is applied and dry. Team WoodCraft can help move the furniture in your home to prepare for the project and replace once the job is complete. We are always careful and cautious.

Q: Acrylic vs. Oil-based Polyurethane

A: Oil-base polyurethane are just that, an oil-based varnish which is often considered a more durable finish. Acrylic polyurethane is a water-based finish which is much more Eco-friendly. In the last 10 years, water-base finishes are by far, and away the fastest growing section of the market. Most New York City buildings strictly prefer water-base finishes for a number of reasons. Rather than a powerful odor, and minimum 24-hour drying time for the oil-base products. Water-base, Acrylic, products have a much lower odor and only shorter drying time. WoodCraft uses only the most Eco-friendly and safe products to ensure your home is a safe place for your family, friends, and pets.

Q: Care and Maintenance?

A: There are plenty of opinions and suggestions floating around out there about how to care for your wood floors after they have been installed or refinished. WoodCraft Floors recommends a Bona ‘Poly Care Kit’ which uses a damp Swiffer head and cleaning spray made specifically for wood floors. While products like Murphy’s Oil and a damp mop have been used for years, WoodCraft prefers the simple, custom effect from the Bona Fina line of cleaning products.
